The Prince thinks he is a rooster. He squats, wobbles and crows. Avron, a simple peasant boy has been dragged to the palace."
You must cure the Prince!" boomed the Tsar.
"What if I can't?"
"Hah!" An odd smile cracked the Tsar's stiff face. "Then you will never be hungry for a chicken again."

A rollicking tale based on a great Rebbe's teachings, The Rooster Prince delights young and old. The Storytelling World Award honoured it as Title for 2001 as one of the best books for storytellers. The Jewish Book Fair in Toronto presented a musical based on the book as a feature for Jewish Book Week.

"Cockadoodledoo!" crowed Avron. The Prince beamed at Avron and squawked, "Cockadoodledoo!"

Springing up, Avron waved his hands, calling the messenger. "I know how to cure the Prince! I know how to cure the Prince!"

REVIEWS

Sydell Waxman's charming retelling of this old parable has many satisfying elements for the young reader: the problem ( a prince who pecks and crows like a rooster) is delightfully absurd, the tension (the threat of beheading) is deliciously dangerous, and the hero is an ordinary child who outsmarts the adults. Waxman skillfully integrates explanations of terms such as "shochet" and "Shabbat" into the narrative.
QUILL AND QUIRE

When the messenger saw that Avron was carrying a chicken, he grabbed him, pulling him onto his horse. "You carry chickens around with you. You must know about chickens and roosters." The story is really a very old one, originally told by a famous Rabbi, who through story demonstrated the lesson he wanted to teach.
THE CANADIAN JEWISH NEWS

Grades 2 to 5. Based on a parable told by the great Jewish sage, Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, this story tells of Avron, a poor village boy in 18th century Russia, who is taken by the Tzar's mesenger to the palace and instructed to cure the prince of acting like a rooster. When Avron notices that the prince/rooster is copying his own actions, the peasant boy quickly realizes how to coax him into behaving like a prince again";appropriate for secular or religious school libraries.
